Pollinator Park

Background

The .637-acre parcel at Land and Turkey Trot Road (1900 Land Road) is owned by Warwick Township as open space. Residents have requested the parcel be transformed into a useable space for them to enjoy. The property features a well-established pollinator area consisting primarily of native dogbane and common milkweed. The property also has a low-lying area that remains wet. The remainder of the parcel was mowed a few times per year.

Project Goals

Transform the current turf grass area into a space that offers:

  • increased habitat for native insects, birds and mammals
  • demonstration of native plant installations
  • improved aesthetics and a destination for local community

Engage and inspire the community to participate and become passionate about future stewardship of the space.

Project Description

  • Construct a trail of natural material for navigation through the park.
  • Enhance the existing pollinator area by planting additional native species.
  • Plant a garden with native water-tolerant plants and shrubs.
  • Install a tiny forest with 1,000 native trees of varying species.

At the conclusion of 2023 the trail was installed, the garden has been planted and the tiny forest has been established.

As we conclude 2024, benches have been installed, additional plantings have been planted, a birdhouse has been established and an educational sign has been installed. Ongoing maintenance is planned for next year, focusing on the trail.

Future plans

  • Encourage residents to become stewards of the space.
  • Improve the center ‘bulb’ to be an integral part of the park.
  • Continued maintenance; including but not limited to weeding, freshening up trail material, mulching, and pruning.
