Wednesdays in the Watershed

Background

Invasive weeds displace native plants in our parks degrading the environment and reducing habitat for pollinators and birds. Controlling these weeds is difficult because the invasive weeds are typically mixed with native plants and invasive weeds often survive mowing while native plants cannot. A team of

volunteers are removing invasive weeds from the following parks:

  • Honey Hollow (Bucks County Audubon), New Hope
  • Giving Pond Delaware Canal State Park, Upper Black Eddy
  • Peace Valley Nature center, Doylestown
  • Lions Pride Park, Warrington

Project Goals

  • Remove invasive weeds in preparation for planting native shrubs and trees.
  • Remove prickly plants like Mulifora Rose along paths to improve safety for park visitors.
  • Remove vines that can damage and kill native trees.
  • Improve the aesthetics of the parks.

Project Description

Each Wednesday, a group of volunteers gather at the one of four parks to remove invasive weeds. Volunteers rotate between the four parks removing invasive weeds and trash, protecting small native trees, clearing areas along paths, picnic areas and education areas.

Future plans

Once areas are cleared and prepared for replanting, we expect to plant native plants in the fall.

Partners

  • Bucks County Audubon
  • Giving Pond Delaware Canal State Park
